How Saudi Arabia Bent China to Its Technoscientific Ambitions
MOHAMMED AL-SUDAIRI, STEVEN JIAWEI HAI AND KAMEAL ALAHMAD
As collaboration between China and Saudi Arabia has grown in recent years, it has often been framed as merely a theater of great power competition between Washington and Beijing, with Western observers citing concerns about the balance of the global order and the sharing of sensitive technologies. But Saudi Arabia has its own ideas.
In a new paper, Mohammed Al-Sudairi, Steven Jiawei Hai, and Kameal Alahmad turn the usual framing inside out, examining Saudi Arabia’s power and motivations in its partnerships with China and how those ambitions have defined the two countries’ relationship.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS
Mohammed Al-Sudairi is a lecturer in Politics and International Relations of the Arabic Speaking World at the Center for Arab and Islamic Studies, Australian National University. He is also a non-resident affiliated senior researcher at the King Faisal Center for Research and Islamic Studies.
Steven Jiawei Hai is a PhD candidate in political science at King’s College London. His research focuses on the political economy of emerging technologies, inclusive innovation, and digital entrepreneurship in China.
Kameal Alahmad is a research fellow at the King Faisal Center for Research and Islamic Studies. His research interests focus on the security and geopolitics of the Middle East.
